N: Speedy Gonzalez’s
Speed dating was not as quirky and horrible as I thought it would be, but it still wasn’t the best. I’m just going to bullet point highlights I remember, because overall, not that spectacular.
- Pre=game successful! Thankfully, because there were not bar specials, so at $8 per G&T, it would have been pricey to get the buzz needed for what ensued.
- The setting: Super unorganized. The proctor showed up late, there was not enough places to seat people, and there was no one really directing people so it wound up being about 30 people awkwardly crowding a space saying under hushed breath - “are you here for speed dating?”
- The contestants: 75-80% Indian even though I specifically did NOT sign us up for Indian singles night (which is a thing) but I selected “Single Professionals”. Most guys were probs under 5’10”
- The setup: Girls would sit around a room in the bar and a parade of men would play musical chairs, with a steady flow of boys coming to their table every 5 minuets. C wound up with a seat right away, while somehow A and I were the only two without a perch to cast our judgements so they gave us the best seats in the house! A private U-shaped booth together behind some curtains - outside of the speed dating room!! We were like princesses on a throne as our victims came in for their 5 minutes in heaven.
- The outcome: We all had probs about 15 “dates” with men over the course of the evening. You were instructed to write down their names and then circle the ones you liked - hand in your paper to teacher - and they’d email you the next day with any mutual matches.
- The good: D: One of the only people I’d probs ever approach IRL. He was there alone and had signed up 2 hours earlier, cause he “had nothing else going on and thought this would be fun” He and I talked a lot throughout the night pre-dating festivities and he was my first speed date. He was cute-ish, right age, look compatible with me and we got along smashingly, decided we’re both semi-spontaneous people - plus we made eyes at each other all night as I walked through the room to go pee. J: The guy-friend of the girl C sat next to. He also worked in advertising, was funny, polite, great convo, well-travelled - definitely someone I’d meet up with again.
- The Not-so-muchs: And I know I circled maybe 2-3 more people, but I can’t remember. Apparently my last date of the night was NOT a speed-dater (although I contend he was). He showed up at my booth double-fisting a jack and coke and a vodka soda (how could I not be intrigued) and we talked forever (cause the night was over - who knew - i was shmammered by all the beers A and I kept flagging down through our dates.
- Everyone else. Can’t even really remember but a handful. Some were over-eager, some were boring, some I could barely understand, some I felt sorry for, some I didn’t feel sorry for. I wish they had let us bring our list of names home because honestly, i can’t remember much of anyone (side effects of the boozing most likely - and my horrible memory)
- In the end, I wound up with 2 matches! D and J. I went our Wed night with J for drinks and had a really good time. I’m not sure it’s a love match, but I’d hang out with him again and try. Then, D and I are supposed to hang out for drinks/dinner next week. We’ll see.
- Nothing too exciting - see.
